What It Means to Work in Digital Marketing

A digital marketer uses digital channels to reach customers, advertise products and services, and build brand awareness. Digital marketers wear multiple hats due to the unique blend of planning, creativity, and strategy that their work necessitates. To keep on top of the ever-growing digital media platforms they utilize to build, implement, manage, and track campaigns, they must master a wide range of skills and tools.

Digital marketing is a distinct sector with its own set of requirements that go beyond conventional marketing methods and creative abilities.Understanding the skills necessary and what digital marketers perform is a fantastic place to start if you’re contemplating a career in digital marketing.

In this blog, let’s talk about what it really means to be a digital marketing professional.

What is Digital Marketing?

In general, a digital marketer is responsible for generating leads, increasing brand exposure, and hopefully converting on sales through digital media. Aside from that, digital marketers must employ quantitative data to uncover flaws and enhance performance across different channels.

You, as a digital marketer, are in charge of budgeting for campaigns and predicting outcomes, keeping up with the latest trends, technologies, user behavior, and analyzing large amounts of data so that you can hopefully gain meaningful insights on how you can make your strategies more effective.

In general, you can categorize digital marketing into several different channels. These are the most

Important Digital Marketing Channels:

  • The company’s website
  • Their social media accounts
  • Their rankings in search engines
  • Email Marketing
  • Paid Advertisements that appear on the internet
  • The company’s blog page

Skills and Responsibilities of Digital Marketers

As a digital marketer, you have to understand the big picture. Too many young professionals think that simply having an internship in Social Media is going to be enough to get you a job. However, when they start applying, they’ll see that 9 times out of 10, only having work experience in 1 digital marketing area is not nearly enough to and a job. The main reason (other than the fact that most of your competition have work experience in at least 2-3 of the main digital marketing areas of Social Media, Email, PPC, and SEO Marketing) is that your marketing efforts move across many different channels so by only having work experience in 1 channel such as social media, you aren’t really getting the full picture on how to properly run a marketing campaign.

For instance, let’s say you get in front of a prospect via your social media channel. That social media channel now drives them to your website. What now? If you only have experience with social media, you don’t know how to keep moving them through the buyer’s journey to hopefully eventually turn them into a customer. But if you understand the other sections of digital marketing, you’ll know that you can track what they are doing once they get on your website via Google Analytics for example. You can then get them to give you their email address by quality blog content that you have there. You can then use your email marketing skills to stay in front of them with helpful emails and hopefully eventually turn them into a customer.

There’s a lot that a digital marketer is responsible for so let’s take a look at what just a few of these main responsibilities might look like:

Creating Video Content

Getting people’s attention online is difficult. Video enhances engagement while also helping helps your content rank higher on Google. You don’t have to become a video producer; instead, concentrate on the fundamentals of video production. When applying for digital marketing positions, knowing how to write scripts, use platforms and applications to generate videos, and what works in videos can help you stand out as providing content in video format is becoming more and more important for digital marketing success.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

SEO is all about making sure what you have on your website is Google friendly. The more Google friendly your website is, the more Google is going to be willing to show your website when people type in search terms related to what your company does. At its core, you want to make sure that it’s clear to Google what your company does and you can do this by having certain keywords throughout your website and in your blogs. This is known as on-page SEO. Off-page SEO is getting other websites to link to yours. This shows Google that you’re an authority in the space and the more quality websites that are linking to your website or to your blogs, the more Google is going to be willing to show your website and blogs high in their search results.

SEM focuses on getting traffic from search engines both in an organic way but also by running paid ads. Most commonly, people run paid ads through Google. You’ll tell Google what search terms you want your ad to show up for, you’ll tell them how much money you want to spend on the ads, and assuming that you’re willing to spend enough, your ad will then show up when those terms are typed into Google search.  Understanding how SEO and SEM affect your online efforts will enable you to collaborate with the rest of your digital team to ensure that you have one cohesive plan that works in unison with all aspects of the company’s marketing strategy.

Content Marketing

Whether it’s a website, video, social media, or blogging, content is utilized to attract and engage customers. It may also refer to anything that can be accessed over the internet, such as whitepapers, case studies, how-to manuals, and other resources. Understanding the many parts of content, including how it is developed, how it is successful, and how to effectively use it, can equip you with a wealth of knowledge for almost any digital marketing function. You’ll need to know how to leverage content, including social media, to assist a company achieve its objectives. You will also need to comprehend content planning and analysis, depending on the degree of job you desire in the digital marketing sector.

Google Analytics

You can track reports, but how you use the information you obtain is more essential. You can improve conversions and boost traffic by monitoring campaigns and adapting insights based on customer behavior. Data collection and analysis are also critical, since the data generated by today’s organizations is like a gold mine that must be used in creative ways to attract and keep new clients.

Design Thinking

This is essential because it not only teaches businesses how to engage customers more effectively, but it also guarantees that their online experiences are simple, effective and user-friendly. Nobody wants to visit a social media page that’s ugly. Nobody trusts a website that looks janky. This is why design always has to be on the top of your mind when putting your brand and image out there to the world.

Tech Knowledge

Technology is the driving force in the digital world, so you’ll need to know what the most up-to-date technology is and how it’s employed. You must adjust rapidly to industry developments and anticipate what is to come in order to keep your digital marketing strategy current. You must not be overwhelmed by change as technology will constantly be doing that. A basic understanding of web development and Content Management Systems (CMS) systems is helpful as well.

Recognize Engagement

You’ll need a strong knowledge of what are the best ways to engage with your target audience. To come up with unique initiatives that can help the company expand, you’ll need a lot of persuading skills and an understanding of what makes people tick. You must comprehend what motivates today’s customers to make a commitment and convert into a buyer as this should always be at the core of your digital marketing strategy.
